A compelling Documentary
Finding The Natchez Connection
About 3 years ago, I had re-opened the Natchez Museum of African American Culture after being closed for COVID-19. While speaking with the Event Co-Ordinator for the Natchez Convention Center she asked if I had heard about the boy with the pop bottle on his head. She began telling me of the producer Steve Collins the producer of the documentary and his ambitions to show the production in Natchez. The story was interesting and sparked my attention level but to attempt to show a Hazlehurst Story in Natchez had no real appeal or attraction to bring attention to the Museum that focuses on the people of Natchez and the old Natchez district.
With a curiosity to learn more, I contacted the producer ( Steve Collins) and he began to give me more details of the story and to answer my questions. The most important thing to me was what connection this story has to Natchez. Is he (The Boy) still living? (If So) What is he doing now? His answers shocked me as I was told he is From Natchez and Is living here now. And most important importantly it brought back memories of me having seen this kid in my youth growing up and being around Lee Donan Barbershop a place where my father worked. This was the kid who was remarkable with numbers and the talk of the barbers and patrons of the shop. He brought amazement and encouragement each time we encountered him.
