Eighty-eight years ago, NCNW was founded by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, a prolific educator, activist, and historian, who sought to create a unified community of women of African descent, dedicated to improving the lives of themselves, their families, and their communities. Today, we are excited to celebrate NCNW’s outstanding legacy of community service, activism, and leadership as one of the largest Black women’s organizations in the United States.
Founders’s Day Celebration
The Natchez Section – National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated celebrated Founder’s Day at NAPAC Museum on Sunday, December 10, 2023. Dr. Bethune founded the organization on December 5, 1935. The theme for the occasion today was “88 years… And the Story is Still Unfolding”.

NCNW programs are grounded on a foundation of critical concerns that are now “NCNW Priorities.” Our organization promotes education; encourages entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and economic stability; educates women about health, promotes healthcare access, and promotes civic engagement and advocates for sound public policy and social justice.
Our Featured Speaker ” Countess Hayes-Thompson
Countess Hayes-Thompson is a native of Tampa, Florida. She is Married to Rev. Tedric A. Thompson and together they are the proud parents of four daughters, Ashley, NaBria, Meghan, and Oliva Thompson. Mrs. Thompson resides in Brookhaven, MS.
Countess received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Early Childhood Education from “Thee” Jackson State University. She is currently an Early Childhood Instructional Coach with the Mississippi Department of Education.

Also, present was NCNW’s newly elected State President, Mrs. Victoria Sharpe who resides in Gulfport, MS. Having the State leader of our organization present with us on our Founder’s Day Celebration not only gives us accolades of a job well done but motivates us to continue to serve and recognize the importance of our mission to the Natchez community.
